NUVO BECOMES NV3 TECHNOLOGIES
New Name Reflects Focus on Charging Kiosks,
Digital Signage, Digital Information Displays

BALTIMORE, MD (2/24/10) — Baltimore-based Nuvo announced today that it has renamed itself NV3 Technologies.

“The new name reflects the fact that we are the only company that brings three key functions – cell phone charging kiosks, LCD screens for digital information displays (DID), and digital signage software – all under one roof,” explains NV3 Managing Partner Ryan Doak.

According to Doak, NV3’s charging kiosks are capable of charging 95% of all mobile phones in 15 minutes or less. “This can be a tremendous resource for hotels, convention centers, and airports, providing visitors with an alternative source of power that allows them to stay connected with clients, co-workers, or friends and family members,” he notes.

This is particularly important when you consider that smart phones can now host thousands of applications, each of which potentially represents another drain on the life of the device’s battery.

“The latest generation of iPhones has some users complaining that a full charge won’t last an entire day,” says Doak’s Business Partner Scott Calhoun. “Throw in watching videos or listening to MP3s, and invariably a user will be shut down when his charger is miles away at the home or office.”

This will become increasingly important as smart phones add even more apps and mobile operators move to implement a cross-industry standard for a universal charger. Last year, the mobile industry set a goal of making a universal charging solution available worldwide by 2012 – a goal that has already been accomplished in parts of Asia.

Beyond phone charging, NV3 kiosks can be used to carry dynamic multimedia messages and digital signage. This has proven to be particularly effective when used in hotels (for lobby wayfinding systems, room and event schedules, and guest check-ins); transit (for arrival/departure and weather/news displays, as well as ticketing, check-in, and wayfinding systems); restaurants (for electronic menu boards and self-service food ordering); and banks (for waiting area displays, product information, and transactional kiosks).

To celebrate its new products, NV3 Technologies has unveiled a new logo and website, both of which will be on full display when the company presents at the prestigious KioskCom and Digital Signage Conference, to be held in Las Vegas April 13-15.

Number of Cell Phones Worldwide Hits 4.6B

(AP) The number of mobile phone subscriptions worldwide has reached 4.6 billion and is expected to increase to five billion this year, the U.N. telecommunications agency said Monday.

Mobile phone providers in rich countries offer advanced services and handsets, while people in developing countries increasingly use the mobile phone for health services and banking, said the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

“Even during an economic crisis, we have seen no drop in the demand for communications services,” said the agency’s Secretary-General Hamadoun Toure.

“The simplest, low-end mobile phone can do so much to improve health care in the developing world,” Toure said in a statement, citing examples of patients receiving reminder messages on their mobile phone ahead of a medical appointment or text messages instructing them how to take complex medication.

The number of mobile broadband subscriptions worldwide is expected to exceed one billion this year, the agency said. There were around 600 million such subscriptions at the end of 2009, it added.

Web access by people on the move, including through laptops and smart mobile devices, will probably surpass web access from desktop computers within the next five years, the agency said.

New Models New Year

We have been as busy as little elves here at Nuvo Tech. As I sit here on Christmas Eve in the snow covered mountains of Vermont I reflect on a great year at Nuvo Technologies. As you can see there has not been a post for some time on our blog. There are many reasons to this but mainly we have been very busy perfecting what most said could not be done. Scott and I have spent a lot of time redesigning the kiosk to incorporate all of the features that clients want. This took time in research, design travel and development. We have set up a full production line that is capable of manufacturing some simply amazing charging kiosks. They have been under cover on our website but we do have a brochure that is available to serious customers. We have also launched our new media player that has enhanced cooling and we will be releasing a new set of video drivers that enhance the 1080 flash video. We look forward to 2010 as we have some great things planned for first quarter. Merry Christmas

The Case For Cell Phone-Charging Kiosks

Just a few short years ago, a cell phone was just that: a cell phone.
If you had one (and not everyone did), you used it to make calls
and not much more. With such limited use, battery power generally
was not an issue. Every few days you plugged in the phone and kept an
eye on the bars in the interim.
Now, however, phones have such diverse functionality that actually
talking on them is a secondary use for some people. Smartphones, as
the new generation of mobile devices are called, can host thousands of
applications, each of them another drain on the battery, especially where
connecting to the Internet via a 3G network and taking photographs are
concerned. The latest generation of iPhone has some users complaining
that a full charge won’t last an entire
day. Throw in watching videos,
taking videos and listening to MP3s,
and invariably a user will be shut
down when his charging cord is
miles away at the home or office.

How can text marketing be used to promote your product or service?

A hair stylist sits in the salon awaiting the next appointment and they never show. A few days later the customer calls in and says I completely forgot about my appointment. Solution: Have the salon signup with a txt messaging system that will send out interactive reminders. The stylist can send a message to the customers and ask them to reply with A) I will be there. B) I need to reschedule
You can also begin grabbing unique info such as, hair color for targeting specific clientele to market a new product line.

This is also a great system for Doctor offices or any establishment that requires an appointment.

Promotions: We have implemented the system into a local bar called Bay Cafe that allows patrons to text-in and join the list to be notified of specials and current events. Radio Stations love the idea of texting for promotions as well.

TXT to Screen: So you want to get everyone involved. Our system will allow you to send a text displaying on a large LCD screen. View it as a large whiteboard fused with Twittering.  Imagine digitally graffiti on the side of a building or any size projector screen, but easily removable. This is just one of the many apps that we offer in our digital signage software called Nuvo DS for short. Our platform is very similar to the Iphone.  We can customize an application that is customer specific and pull it into our dashboard to be utilized with our online program. That app can then be loaded and display on any LCD screen in the world or a network of screens in one/several geographical area(s).

TV Stations: Does your local TV station want to do live polls. We can have people text-in and show the results in real time on live TV.

Mobile Industry Unites to Drive Universal Charging Solution for Mobile Phones

17 February 2009, Barcelona, Spain

The GSMA and 17 leading mobile operators and manufacturers today announced that they are committed to implementing a cross-industry standard for a universal charger for new mobile phones. The aim of the initiative, led by the GSMA, is to ensure that the mobile industry adopts a common format for mobile phone charger connections and energy-efficient chargers resulting in an estimated 50 per cent reduction in standby energy consumption, the potential elimination of up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate chargers1 and the enhancement of the customer experience by simplifying the charging of mobile phones.

The group has set an ambitious target that by 2012 a universal charging solution (UCS) will be widely available in the market worldwide and will use Micro-USB as the common universal charging interface. The group agreed that by the 1st January 2012, the majority of all new mobile phone models available will support a universal charging connector and the majority of chargers shipped will meet the high efficiency targets set out by the OMTP (Open Mobile Terminal Platform), the industry body who developed the technical requirements behind UCS.

“The mobile industry has a pivotal role to play in tackling environmental issues and this programme is an important step that could lead to huge savings in resources, not to mention convenience for consumers,” said Rob Conway, CEO and Member of the Board of the GSMA. “There is enormous potential in mobile to help people live and work in an eco-friendly way and with the backing of some or the biggest names in the industry, this initiative will lead the way.”

A universal charger will also make life much simpler for the consumer, who will be able to use the same charger for future handsets, as well as being able to charge their mobile phone anywhere from any available charger. UCS chargers will also include a 4-star2 or higher efficiency rating, which is up to three times more energy-efficient than an unrated charger3. Furthermore, with potentially 50 per cent less chargers4 being manufactured each year, the industry can expect to reduce greenhouse gases in manufacturing and transporting replacement chargers by 13.6 to 21.8 million tonnes a year. To ensure the uptake of a universal charging solution, the operators and manufacturers who have partnered with the GSMA to launch this initiative are working alongside the OMTP to roll-out the new solution in order to meet the targets set for 2012. The initiative will also work with the wider operator and manufacturing communities to secure global participation and commitment as well as educate the industry and promote the benefits of a universal charger via a targeted marketing campaign.

The initial group of companies who have joined the GSMA’s UCS initiative include 3 Group, AT&T, KTF, LG, mobilkom austria, Motorola, Nokia, Orange, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telenor, Telstra, T-Mobile and Vodafone – some of the world’s largest mobile operators and manufacturers who together are committed to making a universal charging solution a reality up to 2012 and beyond.
